8/1/14

Wed 7/30 - PM 45 minutes incl. 4k progression

Truncated attempt at a mixed platter track session. Thought I'd start with a cutdown, picking up the pace every 2 laps for 4k total. This was to be followed by 400s or maybe the 4-3-2-1 cutdown. The plan for the cutdown was to run the first 800 in 3:00, next one @2:55, then 2:50, 2:45, finally 2:40. Instead, the numbers broke down thusly:

2:58.5
2:51.4
2:47.0
2:44.1
2:40.2
total 14:01.2

dropped the pace too much on the 3rd and 4th laps and with that the die was cast, readjusted subsequent segments to try and hit 84 and 82 pace instead of 85 and 82.5. Got to 3200m 10 seconds ahead of what was planned, but came to realize I had overbaked it a bit by the end of lap 6. Able to hit the numbers at the end but it wasn't nearly as easy as I would have liked and I could tell any further effort would be foolhardy. Had I not gone too fast the first 8 laps maybe there would have been more left in the tank but I doubt it. Didn't take much digging to get to underlying fatigue. Also, I was happy the calf held up to the strain so far and didn't want to do anything stupid to aggravate it. Cooldown was very short and disjointed. Warm conditions but not too hot, light breeze so a good day for the track stuff.
