3/24/16

Mon 3/21 - 80 minutes easy

Area 51. With a good 4-6 inches of snow falling overnight I figured the trails would be inaccessible for the day if not the next few days, but instead the sun came out after lunch and the melting was impressive. Some snowy spots in the woods but overall clear footing if a little damp. Moving at about the same easy pace as yesterday, same length of time as well. A different route than yesterday though after starting from the south entrance to the refuge, having been dropped off there by the CH.

3/22/16

Sun 3/20 - PM 80 minutes easy

Area 51. Took a while to get out the door today after spending the morning and early afternoon doing errands. Straight recovery, with not a lot of effort to give. Not quite as cold and windy as yesterday but still colder than the average for this time of year.

Sat 3/19 - AM 50 minutes incl. 5k road race

Windblown out and back 5k near the ocean in Marshfield. Somewhat tired and bedraggled from the moment I woke up in the morning, not expecting anything earth-shattering as a result. Chilly with a persistent and stiff NW wind hammering away all day. With the out-and-back layout this made for a tough headwind on the way out and a tailwind push on the way back. According to the mile markers, the first mile went in just over 5:20 and the second in just over 5:30. If this is accurate I apparently rallied just a bit over the last mile, not expected given that there was a gentle uphill stretch there. The fun was dampened somewhat by the right calf twinging during the last half mile of the race, something that caught me completely by surprise. Cooldown got neglected as I got stuck waiting for the awards ceremony to start, ended up waiting forever it seemed. By the time I was able to get out and jog a few easy minutes the legs felt really stiff and the left patellar tendon area was unexpectedly sore. I had originally planned on doing an afternoon shakeout but a very long nap ate up that time block.

Fri 3/18 - PM 40 minutes very easy

Reeling somewhat from yesterday, the only day this week I didn't come home and collapse in bed for a too long nap. Made up for that today in spades, not that I wanted to. Can't abide the too late start, running in the dark even though it's post-DST, shortened length of run that results from these things. Actually doing something about it is another matter apparently. Joined by the CH for the run which improved matters a great deal, although it couldn't hide how listless I was feeling throughout. Ran 5 short hill repeats on Thompson before heading in, much like last week.

Thu 3/17 - PM 80 minutes

Lincoln woods. Not moving quite as well this week as last week's visits to the woods, thanks mainly to legs feeling a bit dinged from yesterday. Still at times near the end of the run the pace got going somewhat. Right hamstring remains a bit stiff, and left adductor noticeably sore from yesterday's circuits that incorporated movements I haven't done for months.

Wed 3/16 - PM 55 minutes incl. 8x300, circuits

A week or so later than planned, but a return to doing circuits. Hopefully this combined with the threshold stuff on weekends will serve as some kind of springboard to transition into actual training that might restore some semblance of fitness that is currently lacking. Started with a 30 minute jog that felt just as sluggish as every other run the last three days. 300s not timed and I can't imagine the numbers would have been at all impressive. Some soreness in the the right hamstring which combined with the fatigue led to a more conservative approach after doing the first two a bit too hard. Despite the cool temps and some breeze, I was sweating quite a bit by the middle of the session.

Tue 3/15 - PM 65 minutes easy

Area 51 to Old Marlboro. Still not feeling up to anything of higher quality yet, even though it's been plenty long enough since Saturday's effort. Did some short pickups on the way in just for the turnover, but had to space them out quite a bit to avoid frying myself any further. Once again napped away the entire afternoon like an idiot, which left me running in the dark even though with DST there's ample time to get in a run in the daylight. A very dysfunctional pattern.
