5/14/15

Wed 5/13 - PM 70 minutes incl. 3200, 2x1600, 3200

Longfellow Loop. With a relatively late start it was jog up the road as a warmup and get going. Originally planning on doing straight mile reps but decided earlier in the day to mix it up instead. Tried to hold something in reserve the first long rep and then pick it up on the miles. Probably went a bit too hard on the first 1600 but still able to run the second long rep faster than the first and get through the workout in one piece. 800 recovery jog after the 3200, 400 jogs after each 1600. Took an extra minute after the 3200 for a necessary bathroom break. Splits:

11:39 (5:49/5:50)
(5:05)
5:36.8
(1:57)
5:45.7
(2:04)
11:36 (5:45.5/5:50.5)

Gusty winds all day but it wasn't as big an issue as I was expecting.

Tue 5/12 - 65 minutes

Lincoln woods. Not quite as long a run as I had originally planned but went quicker than I had expected after the first 25 minutes or so. In fact the second half of the run was relatively uptempo. Legs feeling decent although left SI joint area feels somewhat stiff. Warmer than yesterday and downright sticky with threatening clouds in the distance that never amounted to anything.

Mon 5/11 - PM 55 minutes very easy plus 45 minutes elliptigo

Rode over to the VC via rt. 27 and Hudson Road, then a slow putter around the refuge before heading back the most direct way as the sun was setting and temps starting to drop. Yesterday's sticky warmth gave way to crisp dry conditions again. Legs not as stiff as I might have expected after yesterday, but as usual the first few minutes off the elliptical felt a bit clunky and awkward.

Sun 5/10 - double, 45 minutes incl. road mile plus 60 minutes elliptigo

AM - 45 minutes including road mile at Elm Bank. Successful defense of last year's title, once again chased to the line by a WHS student. A few ticks slower than last year but I'm not inclined to care. Woke up feeling drained and tired and the feeling was most definitely still there through the warmup and right up to the gun going off. Marshaled enough focus to get through the race in one piece at least. While I only went fast enough to win to be honest I couldn't have gone much faster. After a brief easy warmdown jog, went for a nice hike along and near the aqueduct on the other side of the river. Much warmer today than yesterday, although the race was early enough to avoid any real discomfort.

PM - 60 minutes elliptigo. Directly over to 10 Spencer, a long wait, then back through West Acton and Stow. I had originally thought of making today a double effort day with some form of hill reps on the elliptigo but realized that would be far too ambitious. Day was very summerlike, warm and comfortable.

Sat 5/9 - AM 50 minutes easy

Watertown. Laying low between yesterday's workout and tomorrow's race. Out and back along the river with a side jaunt to the hill behind Victory Field. Cool and breezy like yesterday.

Fri 5/8 - PM 50 minutes incl. 3(1000, 200)

Another time-pressured, rushed, crappy interval workout. Like Tuesday, no time for an extended warmup so it was right into the first set. Legs somewhat clunky although not as bad as the other day on the Longfellow Loop. However, with no nap I was too flat and tired to put up much in the way of a quality effort. Combined with a stubborn breeze it made for some tough slogging and underwhelming splits:

3:35.0/54.0/39.3/52.7
3:31.3/50.8/38.7/51.4
3:29.5/49.7/39.6/26.7/19.7 last 100m
total 17:38

Still no evidence whatsoever of any turnover, not that I should be the least bit surprised. Aforementioned breeze made for a decidedly cool afternoon compared to yesterday.

Thu 5/7 - PM 40 minutes plus 75 minutes elliptigo

Rode the elliptigo to Lincoln, then a too-brief jog around Walden before heading back. Hoping to do more of this type of ride/run/ride biathlon thing in the future months, time-consuming but worthwhile. Legs took a good 10 minutes or so to loosen up but felt much better than the previous couple of days. Warm day and dry, very nice to be outside.

Wed 5/6 - double, 1:40 easy

AM - 40 minutes easy along the Charles

PM - 60 minutes easy, Area 51

5/10/15

Tue 5/5 - PM 50 minutes incl. 4x90 sec, 4x1 min, 4x30 sec, 4x15 sec

Longfellow loop. Seriously pressed for time and hoping to get something of quality in, which ended up being the monofartlek. Inadequate warmup, jogging down Waltham St in fact and nothing more and then right into the first 90 second rep. Legs feeling absolutely terrible, clunky and awkward, which persisted pretty much the rest of the way. It appears the elliptigo leaves the legs feeling blocky for the next day, although I'll reserve judgment for now. Right calf and tib anterior muscle more stiff than I'd like which also didn't help. And finally, hot sticky conditions made the whole thing quite forgettable. At no point, including the 15 second blowouts at the end, did I feel like I was generating any kind of turnover.
