3/31/12

Fri 3/30 - PM 60 minutes incl. 3x100-200m in 20m increments

Workout itself went well, but the faster running left a mark on my aging sinews. Yesterday's overcast gave way to clear and chilly conditions with a gusty north wind through much of the morning, much to my chagrin. This moderated some over the course of the day but still the usual breeze by the time I got on the track closer to sunset. A long time since I've done this particular workout or really anything like it, but finding the range was easy enough regardless. Trying to stay controlled for the first 100m of each pickup. First 1600 went in 5:50, followed by 5:46 and 5:47, with 3.5 minutes jog between each set. The final 200m went in 35.5, 35.5, and 34.6 respectively. Dug down a little deeper on the final rep, particularly over the last 50m. On the cooldown, felt soreness on top of the right foot, related in all likelihood to having the computer fall on it three weeks ago while in Tucson. While stretching later in the evening, left hamstring/adductor noticeably tweaked. Easy running on tap for tomorrow.

Thu 3/29 - PM 75 minutes

Lincoln woods, with drills on Pine Hill. Feeling better than yesterday, thankfully. Still a bit tired but legs are bouncing back. Left heel something of a bother the first 30 minutes but felt much better in due time. Got a bit ahead of myself in the middle stages of the run, backed off on the jog back from the hill. Gloomy overcast much of the day, wind seemed to pick up while I was out there. Typical early spring stuff.

Wed 3/28 - PM 80 minutes very easy

Lincoln woods. Glacially, painfully slow most of the way, nothing unexpected given the last three days. Still a chore. Went up by the horse paddock for variety, despite the rolling nature of that area. Left heel/achilles twinging at times, last time it was like this was in November and presaged the calf strain. Keeping an eye on it for now. Slightly warmer today, but partially due to the overcast rolling in and wind slacking off somewhat.

Tue 3/27 - PM 70 minutes incl. 10-8-6-4-2-1 pickups

Longfellow loop and McMansionville. Expectations relatively low for this session, feeling tired and strung out still with sore legs from Sunday. Kept the effort somewhat low-key on the first two longest reps so as to make it through the entire thing. Overall a bit sluggish but I did make it through. Temperature has moderated some and wind not as punishing as yesterday, although still not quite comfortable out there.

Mon 3/26 - PM 90 minutes easy

Lincoln woods. Made it a point to take it easy as this day is sandwiched between harder efforts. Doing an easy putter wasn't an issue. The wind was the issue, pegged at 25 mph from the NW all afternoon with stronger gusts. With temperatures about 25 degrees lower than last week's unnaturally warm conditions, made for a miserable time. Found myself underdressed for once, particularly regretting the thin gloves I was wearing which weren't nearly protection enough from the wind.

Sun 3/25 - AM 60 minutes incl. 5k road race

Productive visit to the picturesque streets of West Lynn. Felt sluggish from the jump after a less than restful night's sleep, which was an ongoing theme through the warmup and race itself. Course was mostly flat with one reasonable but not overly steep hill at about 1000m. Felt smooth but legs heavy. Got some separation from the field, such as it was, by the time I reached the hill and spent the rest of the race playing keepaway. Although I was working harder at it than I would have liked. Tried to throw in some blind corner surges in the first half of the race before realizing that I ran the risk of burying myself in the process. Went with a steady effort after that. The fact that the course turned into the prevailing wind made this a no-brainer. At 2 miles it seemed like the race was in the bag, I thought I would back off a bit in the last half mile. Again, this was better in theory than in practice. I was able to coast in the final .1 of a mile at least. Didn't bother to take splits although it would have been interesting to see. Overall a bit faster than I expected given the underlying fatigue and the wind. Cooldown a slow jog along the abandoned rail bed near the GE plant. Pretty as a postcard.

Sat 3/24 - double, 2 hours total

AM - 65 minutes easy, Area 51. Feeling slightly more energetic after sleeping a more reasonable amount compared to the past few nights. Still nothing more than a morning shakeout of course. Temps a good 20 degrees cooler than they have been this week.

PM - 55 minutes easy, Area 51. Went a little longer than planned, but more of same so not a huge deal. Slept a large chunk of the afternoon after sleeping in this morning as well. Very tired right now.
