6/5/15

Wed 6/3 - AM 60 minutes easy

Out and back along the Charles river path from Watertown Square. The beat(ing) goes on. Not sleeping so well of late and it's having a predictable effect on energy levels. Hopefully this can be ascribed to lingering jet lag but how long is jet lag supposed to linger. Spent the rest of the day in the city, getting there and back via bike. Got home late after all that. Very tired by the end.

Tue 6/2 - PM 35 minutes easy incl. 4(200, 100)

The low mileage return from vacation continues. Pressed for time and of course feeling flat and tired which resulted in a short stale run. Today was in theory going to be some form of workout, but I knew better than to try and did glorified strides (untimed) on the track instead. 200 then a 300 jog, 100 then a 200 jog. Even that was a big ask today. Right hammie/psoas tight and pinched. Barely warmer than yesterday, went without the gloves but wishing I had brought them along.

Mon 6/1 - PM 60 minutes very easy

Area 51. The coldest June 1 on record had me heading out the door in long pants, long sleeves, vest, and gloves. Lovely. Felt as shitty as the weather, not surprisingly. Took a few breaks and still thought about walking near the end. Active recovery at its finest.

Sun 5/31 - AM 45 minutes incl. 5k road race

Not one for the old scrapbook. Against common sense and better judgment, decided I would try to sandbag a local 5k that couldn't be more low key for the minor prize that went to the winner after being generously entered by the SO. Tried the fake it til you make it routine but far too tired and strung out for that to work. Of course, one guy showed up who I knew would present issues to my hopes to coast to an 18-19 minute victory. Tried to stick with him early but gave up about halfway through and from there ran just fast enough to maintain my meaningless spot in second. Disgustingly humid conditions not helping one bit. Finished up feeling dead beat. It's going to take a few days to bounce back from this particular hole I've dug for myself.

Sat 5/30 - AM 50 minutes incl. 5x400, 4x400, 1x400

Watertown. Bit off more than I could chew particularly in light of my jet-lagged state. Had a methodically designed workout of 5, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1x400 in mind, a workout which went well back in the winter when I was working out indoors. High temp and humidity along with gusty winds not a factor back then but they sure were today. Still thought I would soldier on, increasing the recovery from 100m jog for the first set to 200m, then 300, etc for subsequent sets. Felt flat and tired from the jump, and decided midway through the second set I would call it a day after set #3. Had to scale that back when I started the third set and realized the well was dry and stop after one rep and call it a day. While certainly not indicative of current fitness, discouraging nonetheless. Splits:

Fri 5/29 - double, 60 minutes total

AM - 35 minutes, out and back from the hostel to the OB pier. Unable to sleep so got up early, very early, and went for a run before leaving for the airport. Shuffling along when I realized there was time enough to make it to the pier if I hustled a bit. From there it was a progressively quicker and quicker run with a most necessary bathroom break on the pier as the turnaround point. Thank goodness there's a bathroom on that pier. Moving much better than I ever would have expected given the early hour on the return trip.

PM - 25 minutes very easy, Watertown. After a typically enervating flight across the country, went out for a brief shakeout with the SO. Tired tired tired but a nice evening to spend out for a jog.

Thu 5/28 - double, 60 minutes very easy

AM - 40 minutes very easy, out and back along the PCT. Pre-breakfast shakeout.

PM - 20 minute errand run in Ocean Beach to the supermarket and back. After the drive back from Mt. Laguna to San Diego, went for a brief jog and then cavorting in the waves with the SO. Fairly warm but with a persistent breeze coming off the water. Also some alarmingly large swells with the incoming tide that didn't faze the local surfers one bit.

Wed 5/27 - double, 70 minutes incl. 6x 2 minute pickups

AM - 35 minutes very easy, out and back along the Sunrise Highway to Mount Laguna Observatory. Longish break in the middle to poke around the telescopes. Other than that a very easy run.

PM - 35 minutes incl. 6x 2 minute pickups. Once again on the Sunrise highway, but in the other direction from the lodge. Dead tired, perhaps because in between the morning's run and this one was a 3+ hour hike through Laguna Meadows which was nice if a little tiring. Still committed to getting something uptempo in, although the actual pace of the reps was likely nothing to write home about given the day's fatigue, elevation, and the fact that half of the reps including the last two were mostly uphill. Dry, sunny clear delightful day.
