Tue 5/26 - double, 1:30 total

AM - 35 minutes very easy, along the beach at San Clemente. Another gray and breezy morning along the shore. Went out and back next to the railroad tracks with a side trip up the pier. Very relaxed putter.

PM - 55 minutes along the Pacific Crest Trail in Mount Laguna. From sea level to 6,000' in an afternoon. Took it easy at first, pace picked up a little but the elevation and rolling nature of the trail precluded anything too rash. Also feeling fairly tired, unsurprisingly. Stopped about halfway through to take in some of the panoramic vistas down to the valley floor and desert far far below.

Mon 5/25 - 55 minutes very easy

Out and back to Ocean Beach from Point Loma. More "Gray May" morning weather with overcast and breezes off the water. Shuffled down Voltaire to the beach, around the park along the water's edge and shuffled back. No energy for anything more.

Sun 5/24 - AM 50 minutes incl. 5k road race

Vista 5k. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but the early start time combined with intermittent showers and cool temps made for a less than enjoyable experience. Dragging ass beforehand which led to an inadequate warmup, consisting mainly of drills and strides. Buried on the starting line, took a few minutes to get around the flotsam and jetsam and establish a rhythm of sorts. Poor warmup made those first few minutes feel even more of a chore than they should have been. Held up reasonably well the rest of the way although the one decent hill at about halfway didn't treat me that well. Eventually able to consolidate what I figured would be an age-group winning position which it was. The prize money spots, which would have seemed to be a possibility given results from recent years, completely out of reach from the gun as this year's edition was much more competitive. Did a cooldown of decent length to make up for the inadequate warmup.

Sat 5/23 - AM 65 minutes

Point Loma, San Diego. Out and back along Catalina Blvd to Point Loma Ave, then south along Sunset Cliffs before turning back. Started out quite stiff-legged as expected after yesterday's travels across the continent. Eventually loosened up a bit closer to the end with an increase in the pace the last 15 minutes or so. Somewhat surprised by the size and steepness of some of the hills in the area, particularly the 800m slog up and over Point Loma Ave on the return trip.

Fri 5/22 - AM 85 minutes

Lincoln woods. Started out very easy for the first half hour or so, then picked up the pace gradually over the rest of the run. Felt better than expected towards the end. A nice morning to be outside, clear and dry with a moderate breeze.

Thu 5/21 - PM 35 minutes very easy

Along the Charles in Watertown once again. Not much time to squeeze in a run otherwise it would have been a bit longer. As expected, feeling a bit flat and stiff-legged from yesterday.

Wed 5/20 - PM 65 minutes incl. 4(5x200)

Not the workout I had originally planned to do, but persistent obnoxious 15-20 mph winds and stiff legs led me to downgrade this session to the short and simple format of half lap hard with the wind at least partly at my back, half lap recovery jog. Broke it up into four sets of five rather than go straight through, which as hoped allowed me to get in more total reps. Took an extra couple of minutes between each set and switched directions as well. Numbers nothing to write home about, and in general the whole thing felt forced and legs clunky throughout. Not exactly firing on all cylinders. Splits:

Tue 5/19 - PM 85 minutes easy

Lincoln woods. Nice run, but slower than I'd like. Still feeling the effects of Sunday of course which explains the slow pace. At times it bordered on very easy in fact.
