2/11/11

Thu 2/10 - PM 60 minutes

Levittown with hill drills on Rice. Cruising along fine until the right adductor started barking around 25 minutes or so completely out of the blue. Stabilized more or less after that but an unwelcome experience nonetheless. Continued cold, winter getting plenty old at this point and it's still got at least a month to go.

Wed 2/9 - PM 85 minutes easy

Longfellow loop with McMansionville and Ruddock tacked on. Relaxed throughout, pace picked up slightly near the end. While the left hip and hammie was somewhat stiff at the start of the run, it's definitely coming around from where it was last month before the much needed SI joint adjustment. I was expecting it to feel worse after all the laps on the track last night. Still cold but without the vicious wind that was hammering away last night.

Tue 2/8 - PM 80 minutes incl. 6x1320

More confirmation of how much fitness I lost while the SI joint was stuck. Warmup outside partially on the river path which was a mistake, terrible footing and slush. I had planned on doing the workout on the loop around Harvard's athletic buildings but the wind was truly hideous with 40 mph gusts. I really didn't want to do all those laps on an indoor track but it became impossible to resist. Left leg still stiff but not as much as yesterday, in fact it loosened up more as the workout progressed and took until the last two reps to feel like it was finally unbound. Before that a chore. I had promised myself not to force the issue and I certainly didn't, but this meant the pace was laughably slow. As in 4:17 for most of the reps with the last one going in a scintillating 4:12. Recoveries just under 90 seconds after each rep. Left ankle sore in an odd way during the day at work, no issues during the run but bears watching. Ran out of gas on the cooldown, somewhat tired all day at work anyway.

Mon 2/7 - PM 75 minutes very easy/easy

Longfellow Loop. Left leg in a bit of a state after yesterday, stiff and sore up and down. Tib anterior particularly tight. Took a long while for things to loosen up somewhat, but it did eventually feel better. Temps above freezing for the second day in a row, with some much-appreciated melting.

Sun 2/6 - PM 80 minutes incl. 5k road race

Unthinkable as recently as Thursday that the leg could handle any kind of faster running, which makes this utterly mediocre effort worthwhile. Took a long warmup, 40 minutes or so that ended up at a decent cruising pace. Very flat course but with the last mile or so into a stiff headwind. I was interested to see how much fitness has been lost since the mini meet due to the ongoing inability to train at a high enough level thanks to the stuck SI joint. As it turns out, lost quite a bit. Breathing hard almost immediately after the gun went off, with 5:20 pace feeling a lot harder than usual. Cooldown was very slow, left psoas stiffened up a lot. Not unexpected, but not nearly as problematic as what's been plaguing me of late.

2/6/11

Sat 2/5 - PM 65 minutes easy

Levittown with hill drills. Despite some stiffness in the left hammie, still basking in the feeling of having something close to full function again. Roads still a mess but slowly getting better as the temperature has risen a few degrees.

Fri 2/4 - PM 70 minutes very easy

Puttering along in Wellesley, out and back along Washington St and Brook Path. Didn't get very far at all, thanks mainly to running all but a few steps of the way on packed snow and ice. Which was still preferable to the alternatives, unpacked snow or in the middle of traffic. By the end of the run psoas was sore on each side from the slippery surface. Of more importance though was the status of the SI joint and hammie, which were both as good as could be hoped and a million times better than they were two days ago.
