2/6/10

Sat 2/6 - AM 80 minutes incl. 3x1000, 4-3-2-1

Quick turnaround from last night, running with the kiddies once again. Left SI joint feeling relatively good after the stress I put on it last night, right LG/quad attachment not so much. These things loosened up anyways after a few minutes of jogging. The kilos were run at around 7:00 pace leading a 5:50 miler through her workout, the 4-3-2-1 cutdown went in 85/63/41/20 leading a 5:00 miler. Nasty NE wind raking across the track made it harder than it typically would be but it wasn't that hard. 25 minute cooldown.

Fri 2/5 - PM 75 minutes incl. 800, 2x400, 4x200

Something of a stunning development today. Woke up feeling every minute of yesterday's somewhat longer run in my left iliopsoas and SI joint. To the point where I was wondering if maybe a sacral stress fx was in the offing. The fact that walking around relieved the worst of the stiffness was somewhat reassuring, but I still had deep misgivings about doing anything other than jogging easy. Deep-seated tiredness from a week of not sleeping enough wasn't helping matters any. 45 minute "warmup" on SW corridor/Jamaica Pond/Muddy river loop, by the end of that the core area was starting to feel better. Planning on doing another glorified stride session of 800-400-2x200, but after emerging unscathed from the 800 and 400 I realized I could do a little more. No fitness or ability to turn over my legs of course which is why nothing was timed. Very little stiffness or soreness on the right side that's been such a mess for so long. Brief slow cooldown, 15 minutes tops.

Thu 2/4 - PM 75 minutes

Levittown to Tiger Drive via Summerhill. Took a while, but eventually got going pretty good. Stride felt awkward and clunky the first half of the run though between stumbling on bumps and dips in the road and limping on the sore left SI joint. Did some semi-strides near the end which felt reasonably good though. The right leg held up like a champ throughout. Not something I could have conceived of even recently. It's quite possible the right leg issues are on their way out, but since the workout Tuesday it would appear the left side problems, mainly SI joint, will be around for a while.

Wed 2/3 - 40 minutes easy

Squeezed in a run before the kiddie meet. No chance to stretch afterwards of course which is less than desirable. The right side is doing quite well after last night's workout, the left side not so much. Iliopsoas tight as a drum, SI joint quite tender, exacerbated by any extended period of sitting. Took a good 15 minutes to loosen up on the run but felt much better by bedtime. Progress is being made in the grand scheme of things, I couldn't have survived the workout much less the day after as recently as a month ago. I'm wondering if the SI joint will stick after every hard effort though.

Tue 2/2 - PM 75 minutes incl. 6x1000

First actual workout in who knows how long. 20 minute easy warmup, feeling flat and tired all day but the drills and strides woke me up somewhat. Alternated directions on the 1000s, all were between 3:42 and 3:45 with around 60 seconds recovery. Cold temps may well have slowed things down but not by much, and that pace was indeed appropriate for my current fitness level. Occasional twinges from either side of the hip and adductors, never felt totally comfortable but never so sore as to be distracting. Made it through the workout in one piece, unlike Saturday when I ran just as many laps at a slower pace, there was no immediate twinging from the right adductor afterwards. The true test as ever is how both sides feel tomorrow. Cooldown was a very easy 30 minute jog.

2/2/10

Mon 2/1 - PM 70 minutes

Longfellow loop incl. Mossman, Loker and McMansionville. Moving much quicker overall than yesterday, esp. the last 20 minutes. Some lingering soreness in the right calf, it's very tight right now, but things holding up reasonably well other than that. Not quite as cold as it was over the weekend but still subfreezing temps.

2/1/10

Sun 1/31 - AM 65 minutes easy

River Street to Mt. Hope, back via rail bed. Stiff of course, but nothing debilitating. Took it very slowly and carefully in the woods where it was nothing but packed snow and ice. My nemesis. Still cold but not quite as cold as yesterday, the wind's died down some.

Sat 1/30 - double, 2 hours total

AM - 75 minutes total. Warmup from WHS to Wellesley College, 3300m @7:20 pace on the track, a minute or so break then 3100m @6:15 pace leading various kiddies in their workouts. Reversed directions from first to second rep. Bitterly cold, wind chill still a factor. No issues with the core while running, but as soon as I stopped, I noticed the left side was barking. It seems like when it comes to faster running in general, longer steady bouts bother the left side, a phenomenon that first presented itself on 1/2. Shorter faster running makes the right side sore where I injured it last March. The good news is that while the left side was sore it wasn't debilitating and didn't lock up on me during the cooldown or afterwards.

PM - 45 minutes easy in Brookline. Left adductor/psoas not a problem at this relaxed speed. Overcast came in and wind cut out, a welcome tradeoff. Still cold.
