5/10/14

Thu 5/8 - double, 85 minutes total

AM - 20 minutes very easy. Shuffling on down the Brook Path. Right leg tight and stiff.

PM - 65 minutes, Lincoln woods incl. drills on Pine Hill. Better than the morning jog, thankfully. Still not exactly burning it up but I'll take it. Quite tired after a fair amount of walking around and going up and down stairs at work. Ill wind blowing, no rain yet but the relatively nice weather of the last couple days is about to get more complicated.

Wed 5/7 - PM 85 minutes

Lincoln woods. Upside of doing such a lackluster track session yesterday is that I was able to run a much quicker pace today. Went by the horse paddock for the first time in a long while. Right leg held up fine for the first half of the run before becoming progressively more bothersome until I took a longish break at the house site just after the hour mark. I have to think the uneven terrain had something to do with this. After some stretching, poking and prodding the leg felt better the last bit of the run although calf still twinging at times. Steady pickup in pace most of the last 10 minutes. Right ankle continues to feel stiff and awkward, connected to the tight calf of course but it feels like I twisted it or wrenched it somehow as well. Pleasant day, less windy than yesterday.

Tue 5/6 - double, 75 minutes total incl. 5x1000

AM - 20 minutes easy. Despite the fact it was a nice morning to be outside I had to wonder if there was any point to this particular pre-breakfast shakeout. Feeling vaguely wrung-out and flat.

PM - 55 minutes incl. 5x1000 (200j). Feeling the compulsion to do something of substance after last week's muddling. Wanted to do something threshold-ish, many ideas floating around in my head right up until the end of the warmup, given how flat I was feeling decided to go with something very simple and straightforward with an easy out. Good call in that regard as I ended up taking the early out. The pace I was hitting is something I should have been able to keep up for at least 10 reps but it wasn't to be. Between the underlying fatigue and the right hip/hammie getting steadily tighter it was a no-brainer to stop when I did. Wind was obnoxious as usual, steady from the NNW with gusts that had to be around 20 mph. The beat goes on. Splits, such as they are:

3:38.0/55.4
3:37.8/53.8
3:37.2/54.6
3:38.9/55.4
3:37.5

Flat as a pancake right now.

Mon 5/5 - PM 65 minutes

Lincoln woods, with drills on Pine Hill. Squeezed in this run before getting a much-needed massage. Moving pretty well although not without some stiffness in the right leg esp. in the glute/hamstring area. Able to do some modest short pickups on the way in, not without twinges alas. Drills were an improvement over Friday's but that's not saying much. Massage was helpful but calf still more stiff than I would like and it feels like the ankle is even more locked up than before. Might be from the drills. Breezy but no gales like yesterday afternoon, overall a nice afternoon.

Sun 5/4 - double, 1:40 total

AM - 45 minutes easy, Area 51. Relaxed pre-breakfast shakeout. Right leg feels a bit better but that's most likely because I was going so slowly. Nice morning to be outside.

PM - 55 minutes, Area 51. Surprisingly uptempo pace for this run almost right from the outset. I was expecting another recovery jog but felt better than that and took advantage. Right hamstring/hip rotator pinching near the end but other than that legs felt decent. The weather got cloudier and windier as the day wore on until by the time I started there were ridiculously strong gusts at times. Had to literally hold on to my hat to keep it from flying off. Typical of springtime I suppose but no less annoying because of it.

Sat 5/3 - double, 85 minutes total incl. 5k road race

AM - 60 minutes incl. 5k. A race I was half-wishing I never entered, as it confirmed just how low down I am at the moment. Thankfully, it was also the least competitive race I've ever run, and as such I was able to accomplish what I had hoped while just squeezing under the magical 19 minute barrier for 5k. Over two minutes behind the winner and over a minute in front of the next finisher, a 12 year old. The whole thing was actually quite quaint and despite feeling lower than whale poo rather enjoyable. Results don't appear to be available online which is just as well. Course was gradually up, then gradually down, then gradually up then gradually down again. Overall not a bad layout actually, I just had no energy to tackle it. The right leg held up, barely, but starting to feel the usual twinges by the end of the race. Cooldown an abbreviated putter with a few stops.

PM - 25 minutes very easy. Making up for the inadequate cooldown. Legs sore but not as bad as I was expecting. Still, desperately in need of a massage at the moment.

Fri 5/2 - PM 60 minutes very easy

Lincoln woods with drills on Pine Hill. Felt absolutely atrocious, mojo at an all time low and right calf continuing to feeling like it's locked in spasm. Not that I was expecting a lot of vim and vigor but the lethargy was suffocating, unable to move at any faster than a shuffle. Went ahead with the drills despite the calf stiffness, nothing to write home about but no further damage done either. Took a few minutes before starting up the hill to do direct pressure on the calf which helped some. Hammie locked up on the way in, this led to lots of rolling when I got home. At least it was a nice day finally.
