1/22/11

Fri 1/21 - PM 45 minutes

20+ minute warmup on the slush-covered loop around Harvard athletic complex, then two sets of speed drills (mainly plyometric in nature), brief cooldown indoors. Originally thinking I'd do one set of drills but the set went by so quickly two seemed doable. A couple of the drills require a bit more coordination than I'm accustomed to but overall went pretty well. Left hammie somewhat stuck from yesterday but like yesterday, it felt better as the workout progressed right up to the cooldown.

Thu 1/20 - PM 65 minutes incl. 8x440, 4x110

Tentative return to track work after feeling a lot closer to being injured since the previous ill-advised stab at it last Friday. More tired than I was expecting to feel and no time for a nap. Leg still feeling stiff and pinched, but not nearly as bad as it has been and loosened up during the course of the workout. Ran the 440s with a 110 recovery jog, i.e. just under 30 seconds. Tried going on feel rather than checking splits every lap. Thought I was going to hit the first one in around 85 or so, instead it was 77. The rest were between 79 and 81. More or less under control if a little awkward. Took a break of a few minutes after this to change shoes and do a few compressions on the hammie. Ran the 110s with the same 110 jog after each, going faster of course. Felt the high hammie starting to tighten up near the end but it didn't feel nearly as awkward as I thought it would. Cooldown outside at a relatively brisk pace.

Wed 1/19 - PM 70 minutes easy

Tiger Drive to Longfellow Loop. Left hammie still not ready for any kind of fast running although it is much improved thanks to yesterday's massage. Tomorrow will tell the tale of just how much improved. Road conditions as bad as they've been in a long time after it rained most of last night and most of the afternoon. Sidewalks mostly slush, all but the major roads have at least partial coverage with packed snow and slush. Not quite the bottom of the barrel but getting close.

Tue 1/19 - off

Not the least bit motivated to run today. Focus was on the long-overdue massage which helped a great deal but of course not a magic bullet. Range of motion in left hip much improved however. Weather abysmal, snow in the morning followed by freezing rain then rain. The dreaded wintry mix, left the roads an even bigger disaster than they were after last week's storm. I knew the only running today would happen on a treadmill and that served as a demotivator as well.

Mon 1/17 - AM 55 minutes easy

Tiger Drive to Longfellow Loop. I had planned on a longer run but I didn't plan on the left leg feeling like such garbage and as a result cut things short. Very frustrating, thought it was doing a little better after post-run exercises yesterday. Decreased range of motion and the unmistakable twinge whenever I try to flex the hip with any force. the glute/hip extensor area is involved in this as well, not sure to what extent and whether it's a collateral result of the hammie or is helping cause the hammie issues. Roads remain a mess, found to my chagrin that Sudbury wasn't much better than Maynard although the latter is still the pits when it comes to clearing side streets. Very cold temps today, just enough breeze as well for a nasty wind chill. All in all not a fun day.

Sun 1/16 - PM 55 minutes easy

Levittown to Summerhill and on to Tiger Drive. Modest improvement in left hammie over yesterday, but nothing fantastic. SI joint feels inflamed. Footing still sucks on most of the side roads but there has been some melting in places. More of a wind tonight than previous days but nothing too uncomfortable.

Sat 1/15 - PM 85 minutes easy

River Street to White Pond Road via Stow Road. The only route I could think of that featured clean pavement, hopefully this won't be the case by tomorrow but I'm less than optimistic. Took it easy the whole way, both by desire and necessity thanks to the left hammie which was locked up the whole time. Despite this, it was a pleasant enough putter. Cold but no wind at all which made for more pleasant conditions than I had expected.
