Fri 6/18 - PM 65 minutes easy

puttering around Wellesley. Dead tired after sitting witness to basketball Waterloo last night. As expected, some areas of more pronounced soreness in my legs after skipping out on the cooldown yesterday. All that matters at the moment is getting more rest as I'm completely strung out from the endless late bedtimes. Hot day but drier than I had expected.

Thu 6/17 - PM 30 minutes incl. mile in 4:43

Flat, lethargic and dead-legged mile to cap off the track season. In hindsight it made perfect sense after what I did to myself over the weekend that my legs would be dead, but the 200s on Tuesday got my hopes up that I was good to go. Kept dreaming right through the warmup. Hopes were dashed by 300m into the race when I realized my legs wouldn't go any faster and were already starting to feel heavier with each step. Undoubtedly from the downhill pounding on Sunday. Had I felt like this in the 5k Saturday I would have dropped out but of course I didn't because I didn't have the shit in my legs yet from Sunday's race. All so simple of course. Hit on a steady fade with splits of 68, 70, 72, and 73. Steady breeze on the home straight, cool and of course humid but at least it wasn't hot and humid. Utterly lacking in motivation to cool down, ended up watching the other heats (and there were many) for entertainment.

Wed 6/16 - PM 60 minutes easy

Area 51. Took it easy at the start, feeling fairly tired. Woke up enough by the end to do four pickups on the way in. Half-expecting to be driven out of the woods by the deer flies but they haven't taken over yet. Overcast and somewhat muggy, threatening skies.

Tue 6/15 - PM 70 minutes plus 15 minutes in Walden

30 minute very easy warmup on the reformatory branch rail bed and Sleepy Hollow, utterly convinced I had nothing in my legs or the energy levels to do any kind of fast running. Still feeling lethargic while doing drills and strides, but gave it a go anyway and got through 6x200 with approx. 90 second jog recoveries. Timed only the last one which went in 33.2, the others were slower I'm guessing. Didn't feel quite like glorified strides but still better than what I was expecting. Cooldown was rather involved what with getting to and from the pond. Clear sunny conditions, still warm but much drier today.

Mon 6/14 - PM 70 minutes easy plus 15 minutes in Walden

Spent much of the day in a supine position, the smart move quite frankly. In desperate need of a little R+R after the weekend's travails. Took a while to get around to the run, which was a borderline easy/very easy affair. The overcast broke mid-afternoon after 72 hours of solid gray, gave way to warm and still somewhat humid conditions. By the time I got to the pond it had clouded over again. The pond is at a temp. best described as bracing, didn't think I'd be able to spend any time in the water but once moving it was manageable. Although I did end up with blue fingers. Quick but intense rain shower passed through right at the very end. The humidity lingers and lingers.

Sun 6/13 - AM 60 minutes incl. 4.8 mile road race

Once again the frog tried to swallow the elephant. Thought I could get away with a little athletic tourism and sandbag a low-key road race win but the turnaround was too tight from last evening's 5k and there was better than expected competition. While my time would have won the past two years, going back further than that indicates it usually takes a little more than a cruise to take this race, esp. given how brutal the course is. Flat first mile, then 400' elevation gain between the mile and halfway mark which is promptly lost over the next mile or so. Legs turned to jelly on the descent and I was in get it over with mode from 5k onwards. Cooldown a 15 minute crawl. Mile splits of 5:21, 6:00, 5:48, 5:44. Very tired before, during and after this thing. Continued dank humidity, which at least keeps the temp down.

Sat 6/12 - PM 60 minutes incl. 5k in 15:20

Penultimate race of a track season I wasn't expecting to have in the first place. Had been hoping for better, but ran as well as I could given the context of not sleeping enough lately. Felt tired on the warmup, adjusted expectations downward a bit and thought even that might be asking too much. Got into the desired rhythm, thankfully there were others willing to do the work so I could follow. As I knew would happen the pace dragged on the fourth km, but I was able to bring it back some at the end. Had my doubts that I'd be able to. Kilometer splits were 3:03, 3:04, 3:04, 3:07, and 3:01.5. Dank overcast muggy conditions turned into rain, temperature tolerable but all in all more humid than I would like. Left adductor sore afterward, cooldown was a very slow jog on the infield. On a related note, as all my adolescent internet stalkers well know the kiddie track season is at long last well and truly OVER. As such I get my leisure time back. Hallelujah.
