4/7/12

Fri 4/6 - AM 70 minutes very easy

Area 51. Out the door before 7 AM, with a day of travel on the docket for later. Right leg sticking at the start at the medial knee/goosefoot spot, not the first time this has happened. Thought I could do the hill drills today but like yesterday, it wasn't happening. Had I run in the afternoon it would have gotten done. Despite the morning chill it was rather nice being out there as the wind hadn't started up yet.

Thu 4/5 - PM 80 minutes easy

Lincoln woods. Not quite as dinged up as I might have expected after yesterday's workout but still rickety on the left side mainly. Hip flexor somewhat stiff, it was worse earlier in the week though. I had thought about doing hill drills but it was clear the legs weren't in a state to tolerate it well. Just jogging instead, although there was a modest increase in the pace the last 10 minutes or so. Almost as windy today as it was yesterday, but no squalls thankfully.

Wed 4/4 - PM 65 minutes incl. 16x400

Threshold-ish workout in less than ideal conditions. Mulled over potential workouts, didn't really want to run a bunch of laps on the track but decided in the end it would be the most convenient option, and no matter where or what I chose to do I'd get crushed by the wind anyway. 100 jog between reps ensured that the pace wouldn't and couldn't get out of hand. This is actually the first time I think I've done this particular session, at least all in one slug. Aforementioned wind started out annoying, became obnoxious and progressed to obscene by the fifth or sixth rep. 15-20 mph from the NW with gusts of 25+. Made it difficult to maintain a rhythm, plus the increase in wind intensity coincided with a squall line of sorts, spitting rain for a short while. Could have been worse I suppose but still fairly miserable. Splits:

80.2/26.8
80.8/25.3
79.5/27.3
79.6/26.9
79.2/26.8
80.6/25.6
80.1/28
80.2/25.8
80.6/27
81/27.4
1:40 for the last 500m

after a while, the whole thing started to blend together, no surprise given the short recovery. Finished good and tired but not utterly spent. I had hoped to do the workout running clockwise to put less stress on the right foot but there were enough other users to prevent this from being feasible. It felt a bit sore on the cooldown but made it through the workout in one piece.

Tue 4/3 - PM 75 minutes easy

Lincoln woods. Started out relaxed and slow, picked it up needlessly at about the 20 minute mark for the next 15 minutes or so, then the left hip flexor/adductor tweaked on me and went back to jogging again for the duration of the run. Top of right foot was comfortable at first but didn't react well to an increase in pace in the last 600m, the thin trail shoes probably had something to do with this. A bit warmer than yesterday but still windy, if anything more so than yesterday.

Mon 4/3 - PM 90 minutes very easy

Lincoln woods. Started out with a little bit of pep in the stride, a very little bit, but it gradually faded to a borderline crawl by the end. Should have known better after yesterday's workout which put the cap on a dense week of training. Left thigh/hip flexor/adductor stiff and sore pretty much throughout, as expected. The gray overcast that dominated most of the day was breaking up by the time I hit the trail but the tradeoff was the wind gusting out of the north and making things feel chillier than they should have by rights.

4/2/12

Sun 4/1 - AM 85 minutes incl. 16k progression run

Longfellow loop. Not looking forward to this one, mainly due to how sore the left thigh and right foot still are after Friday's track workout. Gave it a go nonetheless despite feeling kind of flat during the warmup. Promised myself not to go out too fast, as it turned out this wasn't an issue in the least. Splits:

6:03/6:03/2:55
5:59/6:02/2:56
6:00/5:58/2:54
5:54/5:55/2:51

Had a moment of worry at the start of the second loop when it seemed like the left high hammie was starting to stiffen up, but it didn't get any worse the rest of the way. The increase in pace on the final loop was a classic case of smelling the barn door, in that I wasn't actively trying to pick it up consciously. Both legs stiff and sore immediately upon finishing the thing, the cooldown was slow and wobbly. Gusty breeze, seemed variable at times but mostly out of the SSW so the first mile of the loop was a chore.

Sat 3/31 - double, 1:40 total

AM - 55 minutes very easy, Area 51. Very very rickety at the outset of this jog, mostly on the right leg. Top of right foot still sore, whatever tendonitis/muscle strain is going on there looks to be something that will stick around for a while. Overcast and grim once again with a chilly breeze.

PM - 45 minutes very easy, Area 51. More of same, a bit less rickety perhaps. Took a long time to get out the door thanks to an afternoon nap that was too long. Skies opened up a bit, less breezy than the morning.
