3/10/17

Wed 3/8 - PM 65 minutes incl. 4k-3k-2k-1k

Chickened out of my planned hill loop workout in favor of another visit to the track. Not entirely sure what was behind the last minute edit but I'm going with wanting to get in some longer continuous work. Which I could have done on the hill loop but whatever. Tried to increase the pace for at least the final km of the longer reps, overall they were more of a threshold effort. The shorter reps definitely crossed over that threshold line at least a bit. Final km was faster than expected. Cool after a relatively warm day, very little wind for a change. Some soreness in left hamstring, could be ominous but hopefully whistling past the graveyard stuff. Splits:

3:45.8/3:39.7/3:41.6/3:34.8 - 14:41.9
4R
3:38.5/3:37.9/3:32.4 - 10:48.8
3R
3:33.3/3:29.2 - 7:02.5
2R
3:22.9

3/8/17

Tue 3/7 - 60 minutes very easy

Levittown. Originally intended to split time between running and the elliptigo, but I found myself too flat and lethargic to consider giving the trainer a go. Barely enough energy to get through a lazy break-filled jog in fact.

Mon 3/6 - PM 35 minutes easy plus 30 minutes elliptical trainer

Levittown to Concord Street. Going through the motions, the usual late start. Legs hanging in there at least.

Sun 3/5 - AM 65 minutes incl. road race

First time racing in Lawrence, possibly the last after an experience that was memorable for the wrong reasons. Horrible weather from yesterday continued, supposedly a bit better than yesterday but if so it was only a bit of an improvement. Got blasted for most of the course even though it was an out and back. More problematic was the wrong turn that I took which cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 seconds to a minute. Could turn out to be a costly mistake but hopefully not. Covered a good chunk of the course on the warmup but not enough to see the important turn that I anticipated but hadn't yet reached. Extremely frustrating.

Sat 3/4 - AM 35 minutes followed by 40 minutes elliptigo trainer

Cut the length of the run short due to utterly miserable conditions of cold and wind that made it a chore just to be outside. Bitter, bitter wind chills that I suppose I shouldn't be surprised about but still I was taken aback by how miserable it was. Much better in the basement.

Fri 3/3 - 60 minutes easy

Outskirts of Area 51, followed by 6 runs up Garfield Street in a half-assed attempt to do some kind of pickups on a hill. The cold trend that started yesterday continues, and won't stop anytime soon.

Thu 3/2 - PM 40 minutes easy plus 30 minutes elliptigo trainer

Back and forth along the streets of the Winter/Sheridan neighborhood. Some soreness from yesterday.

Wed 3/1 - PM 65 minutes incl. 4x2k

Threshold/progression type workout on the track, not as much volume as I had originally planned to do but another late start put paid to that. Also dilly-dallied on the warmup, pushing things back even further. Made a conscious effort to pick up the pace on the second half of each rep; successful in this even though the pace got a bit quicker than expected later on. 400 meter jogs between each rep except for the second one when nature called. Splits:

3:46/3:37
3:41/3:33
3:38/3:32
3:37/3:28

Overall smooth if not entirely controlled, felt like the pace was getting away from me the last two. Quite warm, wound up shirtless in fact, with an obnoxious wind blowing the entire time.

Tue 2/28 - PM 35 minutes easy plus 30 minutes elliptigo trainer

Levittown, briefly before heading to the basement. I had hoped to run for longer but as per usual got out the door too late to make it work.

Mon 2/27 - PM 40 minutes easy plus 25 minutes elliptigo trainer

Easy putter followed by trainer time. Happily, no issues to report with the right hamstring or calf from yesterday.

3/6/17

Sun 2/26 - AM 65 minutes incl. 3 mile road race

Tour of scenic Haverhill. Warmup was somewhat lacking as usual and feeling a bit frazzled from the travel yesterday, resolved to take it easy at the outset. The first uphill mile went by in something around 5:45 as a result, even with the net uphill and windy conditions it was measured and not at all impressive. Soon after that I found myself taking the lead without wanting to or trying. This coincided with the course turning into the wind and getting literally sandblasted by a particularly ferocious gust. Second mile 5:12 as the elevation gained in the first mile was lost coming off the hill. Final mile was not quite a holding action as I didn't hold anything back.
