Fri 7/4 - double, 95 minutes total incl. 5m road race plus 20 minutes in Walden

AM - 5 mile road race in 27:35 on this despicable course. Mile splits of 5:20, 5:31, 5:46, 5:44, and 5:14. That race pattern isn't so bad for this course with the enormous hill from about 2.7 to 3.6 miles, but the overall numbers were predictably slack and mildly disappointing. Also predictable was the pain in my tooth and/or jaw that came back to the fore after laying low for the past few nights, not quite as bad as last Saturday night before the horrible effort Sunday but bad enough to leave me in quite the foul mood. Also in no condition to push the pace so I consciously held something back the first mile, sort of. Overall, the effort served its purpose I suppose. Warmup was a very crisp 20+ minutes, cooldown was the same length of time but much much slower as I was fried from the hills. Right hammie also twinged from the effort, not moving so well. Cool with intermittent showers, first mile or so in the middle of a downpour though. Went home and right to bed without eating lunch first as it was 11 AM. Possibly the earliest nap ever. Woke up 4 hours later which gives a sense of how tired I've become lately.

PM - 25 minutes to and from the pond very easy, with 20 minutes in the water. On top of this was the 45 minute or so round trip on the bike to get there for a quasi-mini-triathlon, same as Monday. Hammie mildly strained, not noticeable on the bike but running is another matter entirely.

Thu 7/3 - PM 60 minutes plus 20 minutes in Walden

Stiff and creaky to start, but loosened up substantially within 20-30 minutes. Not as tired as the past few days. Weather rapidly deteriorated once I was done in the pond, finished off in high winds just as the heavy stuff started to drop. The overcast keeps it a bit cooler which makes up somewhat for the constant humidity.

Wed 7/2 - PM 85 minutes plus 20 minutes in Walden

Still something of a slog today but energy levels are much better than yesterday, thankfully. Resolved to make it around Sandy Pond regardless of how long it took. Very tired by the end. Did strides on the way in which took me to the limit of effort I was willing/able to expend. Cool and rainy for much of the way but clouds dissipated just as I reached the pond, which made for a scenic tableau.

Tue 7/1 - PM 20 minutes very easy

Bailed on a planned workout before it started. In hindsight, it was crazy to expect to be able to do anything today after the hard effort Sunday, long overall effort yesterday, and staying up late to watch the (terrible) coverage of the trials. Sense of fatigue palpable right now.

Mon 6/30 - double, 1:40 total plus 20 minutes in Walden

AM - 40 minutes easy. Feeling a bit more energetic after being able to sleep better last night. Some soreness from yesterday. Sticky conditions.

PM - 60 minutes plus 20 minutes in Walden. Plus 45 minutes or so on the bike getting there and back. Moving a little better than in the morning although as expected the bike ride left legs feeling stiff for the first 20 minutes. Did strides on the way in that felt so-so. Still humid but could have been worse.

Sun 6/29 - AM 60 minutes incl. 5 miles in 28:10

Piss-poor effort on a flat 5 mile course. Signing up seemed like a good idea when I sent in my entry five days ago but between now and then I've run myself into a bit of a rut, and haven't slept enough. The coup de grace in this respenct was the re-emergence of the muscle ache in my jaw, aka the bane of my existence since getting the teeth filled. It had been less noticeable recently but was throbbing sufficiently to keep me from getting to sleep. As a result I was complete dead meat from the word go, in no condition to run hard though I tried to anyway. That lasted about a mile and half (first two miles just under 10:40), packed it in from there. Full-on get it over with mode, hovering at around 6 minute pace. Very humid but socked in with fog and cool right as the course ran right along the shore (Day Blvd). Crawled through a 10 minute cooldown, felt like taking a nap in the parking lot after it was over (and before the race for that matter). Planned PM run and swim went by the boards, desperately in need of rest instead.

Sat 6/28 - double, 70 minutes total

AM - 35 minutes easy. Easy shakeout, right hammie feeling tweaked. Continued overcast, humid, and relatively cool conditions.

PM - 35 minutes easy. Different route but the same idea, never really got going. Had planned on going a bit further but cut it short as a result. Still tired and flat.
