4/7/17

Mon 4/3 - PM 70 minutes

Wellesley, Fuller path to Lake Waban and on to the Arches and following the aqueduct east to Babson. Took it quite easy at first in deference to the sore calf which felt better over time and as a result the pace picked up, probably more than it should have.

Sun 4/2 - PM 65 minutes incl. 8x1000

Back and forth on Longfellow. I had hoped to do more reps and be more consistent, neither of which happened. Started way too quick on the first rep and paid for it later on. More importantly I could feel the tweaked calf getting progressively more frayed as the reps piled up. Quite plainly not in a place where it could withstand the strain which is worrisome to say the least. Resumption of some kind of flexibilty/mobility work would help a lot of course. Not exactly brimming with motivation for such things at the moment but if anything could spur me this should. Conditions were sunny, windy, and much warmer than it has been lately which means temps in the 50s. Just having the sun out was a novel experience. Odd-numbered reps had a distinct tailwind, turned around and headed back the way I came into the same wind after just over a minute's recovery. Splits:

3:27.4
3:37.0
3:32.4
3:37.3
3:34.5
3:39.1
3:33.9
3:41.9

4/6/17

Sat 4/1 - PM 80 minutes

Parker/River/Red Acre/White Pond loop, with some short pickups thrown in towards the end. Started slow and the pace picked up after half an hour or so. Some melting of yesterday's snow during the day but trails still not close to clear. Calf held up reasonably well, better than expected.

4/2/17

Fri 3/31 - PM 30 minutes elliptigo trainer

More garbage weather, with a mix of rain and snow through the day. Dithered and waited fully aware of the fact that the conditions wouldn't be improving one bit, came quite close to taking the zero just like Tuesday before finally deciding that a little something would be better than nothing and got on the trainer. Calf is protected I hope by using the bike instead of running.

Thu 3/30 - PM 65 minutes easy

Easy effort, right soleus still stiff and sore from yesterday to an unnerving degree. Something that took a few days to develop for sure. Achilles likely involved as well of course but not sure to what degree. Will bear watching.

Wed 3/29 - PM 70 minutes incl. 10x200

What passes for actual training nowadays. Wound up at the track after an extended warmup that went down Summer to Lower Village and White Pond on to Track Road. Once at the track it was already quite late, plus the usual garbage weather with a nasty wind blowing such that I had no desire to try timing anything. Instead I ran 200s with a 300 jog recovery untimed wearing full kit. Right achilles/soleus alarmingly stiff and tight and it felt at times like I might be on the verge of straining it in earnest. Certainly a result of Saturday's workout in flats combined with the complete lack of any stretching work of late.

Tue 3/28 - PM 30 minutes elliptigo trainer

Even harder than yesterday to get going, partly down to the weather which was abysmal with rain that started as I was leaving work and got steadily more intense over the next few hours. Doctor appt. chewed up a good hour or so as well which had me behind the 8 ball schedule wise, came quite close to taking a zero but decided at the last minute to get on the dork bike instead. Started far too late of course.

Mon 3/27 - PM 55 minutes easy

Easy jog after finally getting out the door. Dead tired after getting home from work.

Sun 3/26 - PM 45 minutes elliptigo trainer

Let the whole day go by without lifting a finger, exercise wise at least. Stuck in errand hell after getting up too late, pooped out by late afternoon. Gross weather as usual with overcast skies, chilly temps and an ill wind blowing. Finally gave up on the idea of running outside as time was getting short and got on the trainer instead. Lateness of workouts is contributing to the negative cycle of getting to bed too late and being wiped out by the next afternoon. Calves somewhat sore after yesterday.
