6/7/16

Sat 5/28 - AM 1:45 incl. trail half marathon

The back half of what could surely be described as an ill-advised plan to do two half marathons six days apart. Went off as well as I could hope given that I spent the afternoon and evening yesterday traveling across the country. Compared to the last time I raced in Forest Park three years ago the conditions were infinitely better with sun and most importantly dry trails underfoot. Course changed somewhat from the last time but the same general idea, roller coaster of climbing and descending. This time there was a much longer flat stretch from about 7 to 9 miles which was welcome respite after a thudding descent that was far too steep for my tastes. Caught and nearly passed on the first major descent by the only other old fart worth worrying about, which had me worried that I'd be spending over an hour trading places with him. However, a long climb up Holman Lane put away both him and the next guy ahead of us and I never saw either of them again. From there it was a relatively controlled effort, trying not to overdo it as it seemed like we hit every nook and cranny of that park in both directions. No falls this time thanks to much better footing and shoe choice than in 2013, but there were a few stumbles, left hamstring tweaked by one of them.
