8/17/16

Mon 8/8 - PM 70 minutes plus 15 minutes in Walden

Lincoln woods. Moving rather stiffly, more tired than I had expected.

Sun 8/7 - AM 40 minutes plus 60 minutes elliptigo and 20 minutes in Walden

Weekend dorkathlon.

Sat 8/6 - AM 60 minutes easy

Portland ME. Squeezed in a run during a day trip up the coast that included various other activities afterward. Back Cove with a side trip out and back along the Eastern Promenade. Other than the supremely redolent sewage treatment plant near the path at one point, a very nice route. Started out with the CH and the pace remained quite relaxed until the last couple miles at which point I realized the end wasn't as close as I thought and so I picked it up more than I was planning.

Fri 8/5 - PM 75 minutes plus 20 minutes in Walden

Lincoln woods. Moving a lot quicker today than Wednesday, though still feeling some dings from Tuesday. Not suprisingly. The dip in the pond was quite refreshing as the conditions were on the warm side.

Thu 8/4 - PM 65 minutes elliptigo plus 16 minutes in Walden

The workout I wanted to do yesterday. A bit pressed for time but otherwise an enjoyable experience.

Wed 8/3 - PM 50 minutes very easy plus 20 minutes in Walden

Lincoln woods. I would have liked to ride the elliptigo instead of running today but it wasn't in the cards. Movng glacially slow as expected. Right calf and lower leg, which held up reasonably well to the insult of yesterday's effort, a bit cranky today.

Tue 8/2 - PM 70 minutes incl. 10 mile road race

Summer of Suck continues. Decided last week that I could handle an event of this duration and do it in 58-59 minutes given favorable conditions. While the weather indeed held and was reasonably dry and not too hot for this time of year, I overestimated my fitness substantially. Ran the first mile too quickly in 5:40, the next one in 5:50, and the next three in an average of 5:55 or so. This was the first indication that things might go sideways as those three miles were relatively flat. Sixth mile trended up and just as I was starting to struggle with that two guys who were obviously at least as old as me cruised on by looking like a million bucks. Last two miles went in 12:45 which is almost two minutes slower than the same stretch went the last time I did this race four years ago. Once the effort pushed back I crumbled to put it bluntly. Tired and flat is no way to go through life.
