Mon 11/3 - PM 75 minutes very easy, Area 51

About what I expected for today, i.e. both legs heavy and sore. Straight recovery run with minimal knee lift and puttering all the way as a result. Finished feeling less sore than when I started which was certainly gratifying. Whether or not I get my legs back in time for Sunday remains an open question, I'm hopeful but not overly optimistic on the matter. What I do know is that training the rest of the week will be decreased in intensity if not also in volume to give myself a chance. Warmer today, overcast and a bit muggy compared to yesterday.

Mark,

i am suffering from significant pain in the illiac crest (tfl) and have been since July. i didn't run for 2 months and then went out for 3 miles, stiffness returned within a few hours so sat out another month. tried again, pain/stiffness acted up so i went to the orthopedic doctor, x-rayed no pelvic fracture so started treatment with physical therapist. two weeks of therapy and no significant change. however, now the pain is in both right and left sides. did you find any relief from your injury? i ran 15 miles last week and went out this morning for three. the soreness/stiffness in both legs returned within a couple of hours.
thanks for any help. the therapist is unsure what else to do.

thanks for any help you can provide.

When my TFL has bothered me in the past it usually responds to direct pressure and cross-fiber friction massage techniques. My issues may be different from yours though. I'm assuming you do some kind of flexibility program as well...

thanks for the info. i have been getting massage and spending a great deal of time working on flexibility. so far, it hasn't helped beyond the moment. what kind of flexibility program do you do? I have been doing a lot of lunges, hip stretches, oblique stretching, starting to work with a specialist that just works on stretching. i appreciate any help you can provide. i want to get back to running but the stiffness and soreness a couple hours after running has really got me down. i haven't ever had an injury before.

thanks again for you input.

My stretching program is fairly vanilla, although I do include a version of the yoga pigeon pose specifically for the hips. Some may consider novel or unique, although I've seen a lot of people doing it at track meets. Stretching post-run is the way to go--see recent NY times article on the subject.
